    • The Sound of Cardinals Fans Weeping

POSTED BY KENNETH ENGLAND, AUGUST 17 2007 12:58 PM | PERMALINK

The only thing that could make Cubs fans happier (aside from an open-goat policy at the Wrigley Field gates) than being a half game back of Milwaukee right now in the NL Central is news that Carlos Zambrano has finished his negotiations with the team and has finally signed a $90 million, five-year contract extension. The deal should be scary for all fans of other NL Central teams, giving the rebuilt and resurging Cubs no worries about having the ace around for the long term.

      The immediate...

    • Offerman Channels His Inner Marichal

POSTED BY KENNETH ENGLAND, AUGUST 16 2007 01:24 PM | PERMALINK

It’s really amazing this sort of thing doesn’t happen more often. I’m talking, of course, about Jose Offerman going Juan Marichal on John Nathans and Matt Beech last Tuesday, attacking both with a bat after getting hit by pitch. It’s really amazing that we went 42 years without seeing an incident like that.

The irony is how different this incident will be treated in this day and age. Back in the day with Marichal, Johnny Roseboro needed 14 stitches to close up his head… this time, Nathan...

    • Ankiel Brings Heart Back to Sports

POSTED BY KENNETH ENGLAND, AUGUST 13 2007 11:52 AM | PERMALINK

Last week I wrote about Bonds’ historic home run being the massively ironic feel-good story in sports this year due to the fact that it took the NBA referee scandal and the Vick dogfighting case off of the front page of the sports section, at least momentarily. Immediately after writing it, however, Rick Ankiel gave sports fans a truly great feel-good story with his dramatic, Hollywood-style career resurrection.

Originally an excellent young pitcher with the St. Louis Cardinals, Ankiel suffered a...

    • Bonds is Feel Good Story of the Summer, Ironically

POSTED BY KENNETH ENGLAND, AUGUST 09 2007 07:40 PM | PERMALINK

It has been a tough summer for sports, to say the least. Between the sickening Vick dogfighting indictment and the horrifying details coming out surrounding that situation and the NBA referee scandal, I can’t remember a time when horrid sports stories dominated the sports universe and mainstream world news (closest would be the “Malice in the Palace” a few years back.)

Thankfully, those stories have fallen off of the front page, off of the sports talk shows and off of the Sportscenter loop for now. ...

    • 756 Has Been Hit, But What is it Worth?

POSTED BY KENNETH ENGLAND, AUGUST 08 2007 05:16 PM | PERMALINK

With Bonds’ 756th home run clearing the right center field fence last night in San Francisco, speculation began immediately in my mind regarding the value of the ball for the lucky fan who caught it. Certainly we will all find out soon enough with the inevitable auction that will determine the price, but until then, (much like his career) let the speculation run rampant!

It’s ironic that this comes the same week that has a fan holding out A-Rod’s 500th home run ball for as much as he can get for it.

    • Cubs Remain Cursed!

POSTED BY KENNETH ENGLAND, AUGUST 07 2007 03:23 PM | PERMALINK

Given the Cubs' torrid play over the last month and their steady gain on the first place position in the NL central, the Cubs appeared to be in the midst of a season of destiny stirring memories of their amazing (and heartbreaking) play during the "year of the Bartman." Just as then, Cubs fans have been bracing themselves for the inevitable "the-curse-raises-its-ugly-head" moment. They probably felt that they had seen it when their best hitter, Alfonso Soriano, pulled up with an obviously painful...

    • In Defense of Barry Bonds

POSTED BY KENNETH ENGLAND, AUGUST 07 2007 03:14 PM | PERMALINK

What an over hyped mess this Bonds home run chase is. Now, its no surprise that Bonds is one of the most hated athletes on the planet (perhaps of all time) mostly because of his attitude toward the press and fans of baseball who don't reside in San Francisco. Of course, most people will claim they hate Bonds for "what he represents" in baseball, clearly indicating the belief that Bonds achieved his numbers using performance enhancing substances.

Now, it is true that Bonds has never tested positive...

    • Tom Glavine May Be Baseball’s Last 300 Game Winner

POSTED BY KENNETH ENGLAND, AUGUST 06 2007 06:30 PM | PERMALINK

With Tom Glavine’s 300th win last night over the Cubs, baseball fans have most likely witnessed the last time ever that a pitcher will hit that hallowed mark. Glavine makes the 23rd pitcher to make the list of 300 game winners, and surprisingly, only the fifth lefthander on the list.

The bleak future of 300 game winners, in my opinion, has only one legitimate contender left to claim that mark. Randy Johnson, who only needs 16 wins to hit 300, is currently in the midst of a stint on the...
