College Football's New Playoff System

POSTED BY Eugenio Hernandez III, 26 September 2007

Throughout its existence the BCS has created more questions then it has solved answers. An alternative has been created by yours truly and its called Winter Madness! The new system is inspired by the current BCS system, College Basketballs playoff system and Division I-AA's current playoff system. The playoff is set up for 16 teams and a guaranteed invite will be given to all 11 Division I-A conference champions. The other five bids would be given to the top teams ranked according to the current BCS system.

To be fair to every conference the playoff is set up so that no more then two teams per conference can receive a bid to the playoff. I've figured that the top two teams from each conference would be the top qualified and no one really wants to see four SEC teams make it in every year. For everyone that is automatically tossing this out the window take note that Division I-AA currently has a 16 team playoff set up. Some people might also argue every conference doesn't have a championship game to determine their numero uno. In those cases each conference is given the right to determine in which ever way suits them who is given their bid to the playoff. That can be through complicated tie breakers or as real conferences like to handle it, on the field.

For increased hype the Fiesta, Orange, Rose and Sugar bowls are given their own division. The winners of the the major bowl games would then move on to a final four where they would battle it out to play for the National Championship game. The National Championship game will rotate around the four major bowl games each year, a concept taken from the added BCS National Championship game. To include other bowls the sweet sixteen game and final four are played by alternating bowl games each year.

For your enjoyment I've included the teams that would have been in this playoff system last year. Next week I will simulate how the playoff would have turned out last year and crown the Winter Madness National Champion! Feel free to leave your comments as to who you think should advance all the way to the final game.
