Sports Thoughts

A few things on my mind after spending way too many hours on the couch this weekend…
1. Unless you conveniently changed the channel during every commercial break, there’s no way you watched football this weekend and don’t have that new catchy iPod song stuck in your head. “1, 2, 3, 4 tell me that you love me more…” Yeah, we’re all singing it. Definitely a guilty pleasure.
2. There are four elite college football teams. Those teams are: USC, LSU, Oklahoma, and Florida. Great performances from USC and Florida on Saturday. Tim Tebow can now be mentioned as one of the top quarterbacks in the nation. For USC, Stafon Johnson had a breakout game and could be the feature back the Trojans are looking for. They actually might have like five feature backs on their roster, but it’s nice to have one guy you know you can depend on.
3. Josh Beckett did a lot on Saturday to move closer towards claiming the Cy Young Award. He actually moved closer to it on Friday when C.C. Sabathia had a pedestrian outing (7 IP, 4 ER) against the Royals. There are a lot of good candidates, but when the competition is so close, the voters might look at a team’s overall record and just give it to the guy on the best team. Give credit to Beckett though. After Friday’s meltdown, Boston absolutely needed that win, and Beckett pitched great against a team that usually batters him.
4.There are a few teams that seem like they absolutely torture their fans. One team is the New York Jets. I’m glad I am not a Jets fan. I imagine Jets fans are not putting Justin McCareins in their Top Friends on MySpace . Another unbearable team to root for must be Oakland. They play a solid game on the road against Denver. Take it to overtime. And they freakin’ win the game on a 52-yard field goal! Only they didn’t. Denver called timeout, and Janikowski had to kick it again. And he drilled the football again, but this time he drilled the left upright too. Of course Denver scored on the next drive. Oh those Seminoles just can’t seem to figure out that it has to go inside the two yellow poles with the game on the line.
5. Bill Belichik is a jerk. Seriously. Come to think of it, a lot of great coaches are jerks. Parcells, Pat Riley, huge jerks. Adolph Rupp was a racist according to many. I think Bob Stoops is the best college coach around (I’m talking about a coach, not just a recruiter), and he runs the score up every chance he gets. What a jerk. Nick Saban is considered a great college coach, at least by Alabama. He’s considered a jerk by everyone. Larry Brown, Bobby Knight… such jerks. Anyway back to Belichik, it’s still funny to think about the rule changes the Patriots have brought about since they began their run. First the tuck rule. Then they manhandled the Colts receivers so much that pass interference had to be changed. And now defensive players might be able to have direct communication with the coaches just like quarterbacks thanks to recent developments. What a jerk.
