No Luck For the Irish
All the Quarterback mystique that Charlie Weis could muster couldn't stop Notre Dame from absolutely laying an egg in their home opener against Georgia Tech yesterday. And oh, what a stinky egg it was. The Notre Dame offense looked helpless and confused, unable to so much as move the ball during most of the game. Certainly not the opener that the Irish fans were looking for, and could signal an absolutely miserable rebuilding year. Even if the coach won't say that word.
Speaking of the Quarterback confusion ploy, what of those heralded Notre Dame QBs? Demetrius Jones looked terrible in the start, sans a couple decent running plays. Purported wunderkid Jimmy Clausen looked wholly unremarkable at the end of the game, struggling against a second string defense simply riding the blowout to the bus. The only ray of sunshine on the otherwise miserable day for the Irish was the solid play of Evan Sharpley, who was accurate and poised in the pocket.
Small comfort when throwing everything an offense can possibly throw at a team still only results in a field goal. Or worse yet, trotting out a defense that seemingly couldn't stop anything, as the Georgia Tech offense imposed its will the entire game.
It's somewhat of a shame that the opening kickoff, originally ruled a Notre Dame fumble recovered by GT, was reversed by the booth. Had the fumble stood, it would have presented a perfect metaphor for what to expect from the entire Notre Dame season, encapsulated in the very first moment.
