Five Football Things I'm Pretty Damn Sure About
1. Preseason NFL Football is better than the Stanley Cup Finals
It's early in the third quarter and I'm watching the Eagles and Steelers play a real snoozer right now. Kevin "Corn on the Kolb" (yes it's pronounced "Cob" and pretend I'm Chris Berman for that one) is in, and I really just don't care anymore about this game. No NFC East implications. No Fantasy implications. But, no ice skates, and that's a great thing. I honestly don't even remember who won the Stanley Cup. I don't care. Never will. Preseason football might not be great, but it does serve as a reminder of how awesome regular season football is. It definitely gets the juices flowing.
2. Randy Moss is no longer a great receiver
The guy caught 42 passes for 553 yards and three touchdowns last year. I don’t really care how bad a team is, good receivers do better than that. Look at Andre Johnson in Houston. Look at Lee Evans in Buffalo. I know how good the Patriots are and how good Tom Brady is, but Moss is just not as good as people think he is
3. Speaking of not as good as people think … let’s talk about Willis McGahee
I am a big McGahee fan. If his leg had not been amputated by an Ohio State defensive back, I’m sure McGahee would be a superstar. But every time I watch him, I wonder where that burst he had in college went. This is not the same guy who scored six touchdowns against Virginia Tech. Career yards per carry: 3.9.
Not good. I know. I know. The Bills sucked. The Ravens are better. Well the Ravens are better, but the Ravens offense is pretty unspectacular, and I don’t see McGahee having a breakout year. In other words, late second-round pick.
4. Survivor pools should start in week two
Have you seen week one? Hardest week ever. Seattle hosts Tampa Bay and that seems to be the only gimme. All the crappy teams are at home, like Cleveland, Minnesota, Houston and Oakland. I think I'm going to take a gamble in my pool and pick Pittsburgh on the road beating Cleveland, and at the same time, pray that Tampa beats Seattle. That will eliminate 80 percent of the pool.
5. Tom Brady is Still the Best Quarterback in Football
This makes me crazier than any other football argument. For at least three years, we've all been debating Manning vs. Brady. And until last season, I think we all finally concluded that while Manning has the better physical skills, Brady was the winner and therefore, the better quarterback. Now, Manning in his ninth season finally stops screwing up in big playoff games and wins a Super Bowl. That's something that Brady has done three times in seven seasons. And all of a sudden, Manning is the best again.
Wrong. Brady is still the best. Oh and I'm not a Patriots fan. I hate the Patriots. But I love Tom Brady, because I love football. He's the best.
