Donaghy Dropping Dimes
It really figures that two days after writing a story about how Stern is taking this Donaghy thing way too hard, that I would be proven to be a total idiot. That's because Tim Donaghy is reportedly about to drop the dime on 20 other NBA refs regarding gambling. Not necessarily illegal gambling, but the kind of gambling that would get you banned from reffing the NBA, as well as the kind of public relations nightmare that Stern has been trying to keep contained. 20 other refs constitutes almost a third of the NBA's referees. That indeed would be a heavy brick to drop on Stern's head.
I guess all that talk of "isolated incident" from the NBA was just PR spin, and I guess I can't blame them on intent. And to be fair, they probably really believed that or they wouldn't have said it... because if Donaghy's charges pan out to be true and not the flailing measures of a desperate man, that makes the NBA look doubly bad for being naive and for being liars.
It isn't all bad news for basketball fans though, college basketball season is right around the corner. Then again, that brings with it the possibility of a referee fixing March Madness games to win his $50 community bracket pool in his local neighborhood. Perhaps I can pay a ref to run Duke out in the first round.
