The Sound of Cardinals Fans Weeping

POSTED BY Kenneth England, 17 August 2007

The only thing that could make Cubs fans happier (aside from an open-goat policy at the Wrigley Field gates) than being a half game back of Milwaukee right now in the NL Central is news that Carlos Zambrano has finished his negotiations with the team and has finally signed a $90 million, five-year contract extension. The deal should be scary for all fans of other NL Central teams, giving the rebuilt and resurging Cubs no worries about having the ace around for the long term.

The immediate implications for the pennant chase are huge. With the cloud of speculation and reports gone, the Cubs need only worry about playing baseball now. With the exception of the injury to Soriano, things have been hitting on all cylinders for the Cubs, and look ready to rocket past the Brewers in the standings in time to get serious about the postseason. To say that Cubs fan haven't been this excited since 2003 is an understatement.... and Cubs fans are probably already looking to ban Bartman from any and all postseason games. At least, they should be.

It's still August, the cubbies have a month to blow it, and with the upcoming series coming up in Chi-town, I think Ankiel's gonna bring it, along with the redhotbirds.
