McNabb to Sit Preseason Opener

In a move that shouldn’t particularly surprise anyone, Donovan McNabb will not play the Eagle’s preseason opener against the Ravens on Monday. A.J. Feeley will instead take the start with Kelly Holcomb getting the secondary backup reps. Controversial (at least in Philadelphia) draft pick Kevin Kolb will take the field in the second half to give Eagles fans a glimpse of the future.

The move is certainly a sound one for the Eagles, as McNabb needs no preseason warmup to his mechanics or gameplan (as his MVP-like start to the season before blowing out his knee proved last year.) Resting his knee instead of putting him through meaningless preseason games is certainly the better part of valor. In fact, if the Eagles were smart, they wouldn’t put McNabb in full-action mode until the first official season game. McNabb’s understanding of Reid’s offense and passing mechanics have never been in question, but his health certainly has.
